Carol I - regele României

  • Subiect: The constitutional monarchy was established in Romania on the 10th of May 1866, together with the bringing in of prince Charles of Hohenzollern. After the historical moment when Romania became independent as a result of its participation in the russian-turkish war (1877-1878), there were created the ideal conditions to the proclamation of the kingdom and the granting of the title of ,,King'' to Charles the Ist, official ceremony held on the 10th of May 1881. The Crown Domains were established (1884) in order to stabilize better the new german dynasty in Romania and the succession to the throne was conceded to prince Ferdinand, King Charles' nephew. During the 48 years of his reign, Charles the Ist knew how to maintain a balance between the Legislative (the Parliament) and the Executive (the Government); he introduced the system of the government rotation to the two important political parties: the National Liberal Party and the Conservative Party; he involved himself in the development of education and culture. There were, of course, social-democrat, anti-dynasty movements, peasant mutinies, which weakened the social hasis. In the external policy, Romania signed the alliance treaty with the Triple Alliance (1883), which was renewed in the years that followed, until 1912. The treaty was kept secret, because it would have wronged the public opinion, which was in favor of the struggle for freedom of the romanians in the territories occupied by Austro-Hungarian Empire. Romania participated in the second Balkan War, imposing the Peace at Bucharest (the l0th of August 1913). The unleashing of the First World War determined King Charles the Ist to con vene the Crown Council. Although he pleaded in favor of the observing of the agreement with the Triple Alliance, as a constitutional monarch he had to comply with the majority of political personalities in favor of the country's neutrality. Shortly after, on the 27th of september 1914, King Charles the Ist died at age 75 and the great era of Romania's development ended.
