Mesianismul ardelean şi Bârladul. Ştefan Neagoe

  • Subiect: Ştefan Neagoe was one of the great personalities of the culture in Bârlad in the latter half of the 19th century. He was born on the 18th of november 1838 in Micasasa locality in Transylvania. He studied in Blaj, Sibiu and abroad in Vienna and Roma where he passed his examination for a doctor's degree in law and Romanie sciences. He worked for a short time as a public prosecutor in Bucharest, then he devoted himself to education. He participated in the foundation of "Al.I. Cuza" Gymnasium in Focşani, discharging the function of headmaster. In 1866 he settled down for good in the town of Bârlad. Şt.Neagoe carried on a valuable activity as a teacher, textbook publisher, man of letters, researcher, journalist and politician. He passionately taught Romanian and Latin for 27 years at "Gh.Roşca Codreanu" High School in Bârlad. Şt.Neagoe brought his contribution to the opening of the Normal School, to the publication of the first newspaper în Bârlad "Semănătorul" ("The Sower "), of a "Grammar of the Romanian Language which kney eleven republications, to the publication of a manuscript of folk literature known under the mame of Codex Neagoeanus. În 1881 he initiated another newspaper "Paloda " having a liberal politica/ direction in which he criticized the hard condition of the peasants, of the rural education, of the Romanian population in the AustrianHungarian Empire. For his distinguished activity Şt. Neagoe received the "Bene Merenti" decoration and the "Coroana României" order. After a long suffering Ştefan Neagoe died on the 23rd of august 1897.
