Trupele aeropourtate din România la începutul Războiului Rece - 65 de ani de la reînfinţatrea batalionului de paraşutişti

  • Subiect: Following the establishment of NATO, in April 1949, the role and political status of Romania and its armed forces changed considerably, although neither the country nor the armed forces recovered from the exhausting war that resulted in heavy losses, reduced forces and precarious equipment. Situated on the other side of the Iron Curtain, taken under the wing of Moscow, at the beginning of the Cold War, Romania benefited from its geographical position, considering that the border with rebellious Yugoslavia became, in the view of the Soviet Military Command, the forward alignment of probable military operations, and the Romanian armed forces came to be a strategic element of prime importance. I.V. Stalin directive in January 1951 on the establishment of modern, powerful and combat ready armed forces within 2-3 years in popular democratic countries accelerated the process of revitalisation of airborne troops in the Romanian Armed Forces, which were disbanded in March 1945 following the order of the Allied Control Commission – Soviet. On 1 November 1950, the 1st Paratrooper Battalion, subordinate to the Military Air Force Command, was established in Tecuci, within the Aviation Training Centre.
