Pigmentul roşu în reprezentările suveranilor din Ţara Românească şi Moldova - semnificaţii simbolice

  • Subiect: Of all the colours, those that represent par excellence the symbol of power are red and gold. Red expresses at the highest degree the idea of majesty, power and this colour is frequently present on the arms of sovereigns in medieval Europe, but as well on ceremonial robes. The red accents on some significant details also appear in many votive paintings on the sovereigns’ shoes, on clothing, on collars and in the representation of angels or different pieces of cloth used in ceremonial. The imperial idea in the Romanian Principalities arose in the Middle Ages among some Romanian rulers (Stefan cel Mare, Neagoe Basarab, Vasile Lupu, Serban Cantacuzino) who, in a noticeable or hidden way, tried to claim their Byzantine ascendancy. It can be seen from this study that the dominant chromatic, red, appears in the votive portraits of the rulers who had dynastic aspirations, claiming their Byzantine ascendancy, or of those who pretended to be the followers of the Byzantine emperors.
