  • Subiect: A GERMANIC SHIELD UMBO The piece was in a fragmental condition. Approx. 85% of it were fragments 10% has badly crushed fragments. The piece presented a non-uniform metalic core. Its surface was covered by an non uniform film of magnetite over which layers of ferric oxide and mechanical layers of soil overlapped. The purpose of the restoration was to remove the elements that had generated active corrosion, to stabilise the piece from the chemical point of view, to strengthen and complete it. The operation of restoration continued with the drying and the strengthening of the piece by impregnating it with graphite araldite epoxy resin.The missing parts were completed with araldite epoxy resin on a glass fibre support.Then they were finished and immersed in cellulose nitrate dope.
