Un instrument muzical de la Cetăţeni şi o dată de cronologie absolută care intrigă

  • Subiect: A musical instrument from Cetăţeni and an intriguing date of absolute chronology The paper features a fragmentary flute made in a long bone of big bird (most likely a mountain eagle or a bald eagle) discovered in 2008 (not archeologically) along with numerous other animal bones and archeological artifacts (potsherds, arrowheads, nails etc.) dating back to the pre-Roman Late Iron Age and also to the Middle Ages, on the tip of the „Cetăţuia Negru Vodă” rocky hillock from Cetăţeni. Here a fortress functioned during the Late Iron Age, and again in the Middle Ages, connected to the settlement from the foot of the cliff, spread along the left bank of Dâmboviţa river. Today the top of the hillock is occupied by an Orthodox monastery. Radiocarbon dating of the bird bone from which the flute was made indicates a clear date around 1100 AD. This date is quite early for the medieval fortress and settlement of Cetăţeni, but offers a not entirely improbable chronological hint, given that the oldest traces of medieval habitation here dates back to the 13th century at the latest.
