Episcopul Rîmnicului Vartolomeu Stănescu

  • Subiect: Nowadays, it’s less known that Vartolomeu Stănescu (1875-1954) the bishop of Râmnic, was an important personality for the Romanian Orthodox Church, even though he was the main reason for the abolition of Râmnic Bishopric of New Severin in 1939. For the local community this fact was a real disaster. People of Râmnic had been protested couple of times for bringing back the Episcopal Chair to Râmnic in 1945, and they succeeded. The bishopric was reestablished. Vartolomeu was the promoter for what is called today „social Christianity”. Later the next Patriarch Justinian Marina took ideas from it and created „social apostleship”, in which he strongly believed in the social mission of church, a kind of Christianity corresponding to the new reality. Vartolomeu’s reform program of raising the culture and moral level of people started on October 20th 1921 from the union of almost 900 Oltenian priests gathered in „Renaissance” Society. This is the initial point for one of the most remarkable work made by priests that had ever been in the whole life of Romanian Orthodox Church, after 1918. Finally, with all his merits, Vartolomeu was removed. There were 2 approaches addressed to the Bishop: the defiance of State (identified by the Bishop with interwar politics) and his legionary activity. Finally, the political crisis started in Vâlcea by the Bishop, ended with his forced retirement in November 1938. The ex-bishop continued to carry his life at the Bistriţa monastery until his death that came up in 1954.
