Jandarmeria în Marele Război 1914-1918

  • Subiect: Gendarmerie in the Great War 1914-1918 Throughout the First World War, out of the 6243 men of the gendarmerie units and subunits, over 1414 fought alongside the Romanian Armed Forces. The gendarmes executed a wide range of missions such as: enforcing the army's mobilization plans, guarding and protecting the HQs of the operative units, collecting and analyzing enemy intelligence, supporting the fighting formations, assuring the police service, guarding prisoners of war, evacuating the civilian population out of operative areas, making requisitions for the armed forces in order to annihilate enemy intelligence networks, guarding factories producing materials of war, guarding the main communication networks, catching deserters, guarding works of art, draining battlefields, guarding oil fields. From the beginning of the war until August 1918, the Romanian Gendarmerie lost 3 officers, a colonel and two captains, l0 NCOs, 36 sergeant majors, 16 sergeants, 2 brigadiers, 39 corporals, and 14 soldiers, 150 men in all. Except for all those mentioned above, another 129 gendarmes were taken prisoners, 1 officer, 17 master sergeants, 49 sergeant majors, 14 sergeants, 4 brigadiers, 26 corporals and 18 soldiers. On June 1st, 1918, by High Roya! Decree no 1198, the Law for the organization of the rural gendarmerie was changed thus helping consolidate the union between Bessarabia and Romania, just as Alexandru Marghiloman, president of the Council of Ministers, announced that the extension of the territory after the union asks for the extension of the gendarmerie and a new organization of its components.
