Clerul Moldovei şi Unirea Principatelor

  • Subiect: The 160th year anniversary of the unification of the Romanian principalities gave us the opportunity to evoke the clergy’s contribution in attaining this glorious ideal of the Romanian people. If we were to talk about the founders of the unification of the Romanian principalities, we would have to examine the first half of the 19th century. We will discover legends - like figures, people who were driven by pure feelings of unity, justice, faith, freedom and love towards their nation, language and culture. The chronicle that preceded the grand act that took place on the 5th of January 1859 in Iassy and on the 24th of January in Bucharest, also mentions the names of hierarchs, monks and priests that fought bravely for the union. With very few exceptions, the clergy has always been close to the people, empathizing with their needs, feeling happy for them in joyful times and even being there for them in their moments of disappointment. But more than that, the clergy helped the people in achieving their ideals. While the 19th century brought times of national revival, the Orthodox clergy, along with other enlightened men, had a substantial contribution to the formation of the modern state.
