Cu privire la activitatea lapidarilor din Dacia

  • Subiect: ABOUT THE ACTIVITY OF THE LAPIDARII lN DACIA The lapidarii are a category of handicrafts men well known in Dacia. The term lapidarius is used for the person who processed the stone after it was exploited from the quarry. Another related term is lapicida, used for the person who wrote on the stone. In the Roman Empire there are known more categories of lapidarii or marmorarii. We know the one who cut the stone in right angles (lapidarius quadratarius), the one who conducts aa work in marble (a marmoribus magister), or the simple stone worker (faber lapidarius). Most of the stone monuments are made by anonymous artisans, as there are few those who made epigraphical or sculptural monuments whose names are known. We find the same situation in the provinces limitrophe to Dacia. The aspects related to the lapidarii, their organisation and way of working are important aspects for the cultural and economical life of a province.
