Vase cu inscripţii (graffiti) de la Saemizegetusa Regia

  • Subiect: Graffiti from Sarmizegetusa Regia The study deals with a few pottery fragments coming from Sarmizegetusa Regia - the Capital of the Dacian kingdom, and it' s discussing the problem of writing in the community that inhabited that area during the pre-roman times, especially in the 1st century A.D. This kind of discoveries are more and more frequent within the last years, it can be also mentioned some other inscriptions on ceramics, stone and iron tools (see notes no. 3-4) using mainly the Greek alphabet. They also re-open the problem of writing in Dacia in the late Iron Age. Such inscribed fragments were found in various contexts from the entire area of the Dacian Capital (very highly inhabited in the last two centuries before the Roman conquest - 106 A.D.), but especially in Sarmizegetusa Regia. On these pot fragments are to be found only one two or three letters inscribed mainly after firing. Their meaning is more often hard to understand because we don't know the language it was used- Greek, Latin or Dacian. Also, because there are no extended inscriptions, only groups of letters. lt is more probable that they are economic notations (quantities of products, prices, or potter's marks) or monograms (see notes no. 17, 24). Taking into account the number of such discoveries (more than 50 found until now) we are dealing with an almost urban organization of the economy, property and way of life in Sarmizegetusa Regia. All these aspects are corresponding to other archaeological discoveries form this site - the number of workshops, granaries, the partition of the "town" (sacred area, fortress and civilian settlement), the drainage and the water supply sewer system frorn the civilian settlement and, also, the large number of inhabited terraces - more than 200.
