Problematica naţiunii şi reflecţia ei în arhitectura oraşului Cluj în secolul al XIX-lea

  • Subiect: The current article investigates the way in which architecture takes part in the formation of an official national identity. Our case study concerns the 19th century city of Cluj with its specific Transylvanian socio-political situation. Our aim is to show the intrinsic dynamic of architectural styles and thus to challenge the direct causal relationship between symbolic forms and power. We aim therefore to show the limits of centre-periphery subordination in terms of architectural representations and to show how directives are negotiated at local level. The ornament proves to be not a gratuitous element, but a symbolic detail.
