Vasele de bronz romane de la Ilişua/Arcobadara

  • Subiect: The paper analyses a number of 23 fragments belonging to Roman bronze vessels which were discovered at Ilişua/Arcobadara during old excavations undertaken by Torma Károly in the second half of the 19th century and during field research carried out inside the auxiliary fort starting with 1978. A small group of objects is represented by stray finds identified on the surface of the fort which were part of private collections. The main types identified are represented by casseroles with disc-ended handle (no. 1), including Gödåker type (nos. 2-3), dippers and strainers belonging to Eggers’ type 160 (no. 4) and 161 (no. 5), jugs with spout of Canterbury type (no. 6), lids coming from sheet bronze jugs Bolla I and II (nos. 7-11), globular amphorae (no. 12), and steep-walled basins with appliqués shaped as stylized birds (nos. 13-15). Due to the fragmentary state of preservation, it was not possible to identify the type for three of the objects (nos. 16-18) included in the analysis and for other five (nos. 19-23) it is not clear whether they belong to bronze vessels or not. Based on the chronology offered by periods in which the types were produced it was possible to isolate three moments in time related to the import of such goods at Ilişua/Arcobadara: the first one is connected to the troops which built the first timber fort at the beginning of the 2nd century AD and the vessels belonging to it arrived in the new province together with their owners. The second one is represented by bronze vessels which arrived at the site till the middle of the 2nd century AD and the third consists of vessel types which were imported from the middle/last decades of the 2nd century AD till the middle of the 3rd century AD.
