Contribuţii la viaţa cultural-religioasă a populaţiei rurale din Dacia romană intracarpatică

  • Subiect: We have analyzed only those proves - inscriptions, plastic monuments, pots with ornament in relief representing snakes - that by their content and clear circumstances in which they were discovered, show an undoubted connection with rural life. We come up to 69 votive inscriptions and perhaps 34 (kept fragmentary), to which are added others about 85 plastic monuments (statues, statuettes, reliefs, clay medallions representing gods) and more fragments of pots with snakes, discovered in 14 rural settlements. Based on them, we could try a scale of intra-Carpathian Dacia rural inhabitants' religious preferences. We remark the predomination of Roman-Greek traditional rites. Ahead is also Jupiter with at least 25 monuments, followed by Silvanus with 11 monuments, Diana with 10 monuments. Hercules was honored with 6 monuments, Mercurius with 4, and Liber Pater and Fortuna, each with 3. Regarding the foreigners, only the Iranian Mithras is evoked in 14 monuments, and the local gods of Thraco- Getic origin, are very rare. The Thracian Knight is attested by 4 monuments and the Danubian Knights by 2 discoveries. The pots with relief ornament representing snakes indicate the rural communities' involvements in the commemoration of some rites. Considering some concrete observations from Ulpia Traiana and Porolissum, they urge us to believe that they were used in the Liber Pater's ritual. Studying ancient literature we could state some considerations regarding the simplicity of the rite in the rural areas and also the fact that it was shared by all the members of the community. Taking into account some recent discoveries we should reconsider, also, the role of Christianity in some rural communities' religious life, including the native population.
