Spade medievale din colecţia Muzeului de Istorie Aiud

  • Subiect: The article presents two medieval swords which are in the Museum's collection. The first one belongs to category G - blade for striking and thrusting, handle for one hand, guard variant f, pommel type 11 - in accordance with Z.K. Pinter's typology. Chronologically, it is placed between the beginnings of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th century. Concerning the classification of the constituent parts, the sword can be integrated to type XI, based upon the pommels and the cross - guards, or type VIII, subtype VIII b, based upon the blade and the hilt. Type XI is specific to heavy swords, for striking and thrusting, conceived to be used in infantry fight, while type VIII is perfectly adapted to chivalry fight. The sword from Aiud can be integrated to type VIII, subtype VIII b, the pommel, characteristic for heavy swords, handle for two hands, representing a sign for early dating, or the reusing of an older blade. The second sword belongs to the type X and XI, category H - blade for striking and thrusting, handle for two hands, pommel type 9 - after Z.K. Pinter's typology. From a chronological point view it is placed between the second half of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century. The second sword can be integrated to type X or XI, whose defining elements are the hilt for two hands and the blade with two or three shallow fullers.
