Personalităţi ale istoriei şi culturii naţionale evocate în lucrările profesorului Ştefan Manciulea

  • Subiect: When researching the life and work of Ştefan Manciulea (1884-1985) one can find a remarkable personality who followed closely the scientific and cultural tradition of the town of Blaj. With a humble attitude but with an extraordinary work capacity, Ştefan Manciulea proved to be a teacher, scientist, as well as a promoter of the national culture. He was born in the village Straja, Alba County, on the 6th of December 1894. He attended school in Blaj and after finishing high-school he became student of the Greek-Catholic Theological Academy. Following the Great Union of the Romanians in 1918, he left for Bucharest where he attended The Faculty of Letters and Philology, with a degree in geography and history. After a hard period of research, in 1936 he became doctor „Summa cum laudae” with the thesis „The western border”. Along the years he was a teacher at the „Moise Nicoară” High-school from Arad, priest in Straja, managing director of Blaj Library. In 1939 he founded The Museum from Blaj. He was also a secondary inspector of Mureş region, Astra chairman for Blaj county, lecturer in the geography department of Cluj University. After 1947 he was considered an undesirable person by the communist regime, he was fired then imprisoned during 1951-1955 and 1961-1964. He was allowed to have only unskilled jobs after the prison years. He died on the 12th of July 1985, leaving behind a very rich scientific and didactic work. His research includes, besides his most famous book „The Western border”, hundreds of articles most of them about „the little Venice” as he called Blaj, his hometown. Most of his work reflects the life and history of Blaj town and of the personalities of the Romanian culture related to this important town. The paper presented hereby refers to this aspect presenting personalities such as Bishop Ioan Inochentie Micu Clain, Avram Iancu, Timotei Cipariu, Nicolae Iorga and Augustin Bunea.
