Un dregător nemţean la cumpăna secolelor XVI-XVII: Dămian Vistier

  • Subiect: One of the most durable high ranks in Moldavia during the Middle Ages was that of uricar, meaning a secretary in a voivode’s chancellery. As it is known, the frequent changes of the head of state during the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the next century brought about several changes of the High Council’s members. This frequent adjustment did not affect the secretaries of the Chancellery (uricar, or diac), as they were among the few who knew the diplomatic languages, especially Slavonic. Among these high officials, in the last two decades of the 16th century and the first decade of the 17th century, we can find Dămian uricar, later the second or third treasurer. As he was not a high boyar, he is not mentioned by the historians, although his estates were not negligible, and we find several documents bearing his name. These documents, which were published in different collections, as they are issued either by the voivode or made out by boyars, are the basis of this study. We meant to emphasize the role which this boyar played in the epoch, the importance of the relations with other noble families regarding the social and economic ascent, the villages which he owned, and also some aspects regarding the endowment of various religious institutions. After analysing the documents of the time we found that, although Dămian did not hold a high office, his land possessions were among the largest ones; he owned at least nine villages in counties such as Neamţ, Vaslui, Fălciu and Suceava. Some of these villages were inherited from his parents (the case of those in Neamţ), or constituted his wife’s dowry (as she was the descendant of an old family, whose lineage went back in the 15th century). Other villages were to be acquired by purchase or exchange especially at the time when he held the high office of treasurer which conferred him the material means to increase his fortune. We have not identified any establishments of this boyar, but in the spirit of piety specific to the medieval man, he was a benefactor for some monasteries, such as Secul and Râşca, which he gifted with villages from his own patrimony; these donations were also reconfirmed after his death, by his wife, Nastasia “Dămieneasa”.
