Bérthelot This article is an analysis of original pages in the diary of General Henri Mathias Bérthelot, acting as head of the French Mission in Romania in World War I. Following a request of King Ferdinand, the Supreme Commander of the Romanian Army, to the French authorities, to send to Romania a qualified French general, Henri Mathias Bérthelot is appointed Head of the French Mission. Throughout the mission's presence in Romania, General Bérthelot also played the role of military advisor for King Ferdinand, Supreme Commander of the Romanian Army. These pages in Bérthelot's diary include information revealing the atmosphere in the Roman ian army on the front, and also the severe situation of the population that was forced to retreat away from the German advancement in the territory. The retreat was dramatic due increasingly unfavourable weather conditions, but also insufficient means of transport. On King Ferdinand' s orders, the Great Romani an General Headquarters moved to Buzău, to the Communal Palace. This article is a presentation of the activity of H. M. Bérthelot, Head of the French Mission in Romania, in November-December 1917. He remained a loyal and devoted friend of the Romanian people to the last day of his life.
