Asediul Timişoarei din anul 1596 într-o relatare germană de epocă

  • Subiect: Banat was one of the European regions which was many times presented in the news bulletins called as "newe Zeitung" in German, or "Avviso" in Italian, possible to be named "the newspapers" of those times. Among the news of the moment of 1594-1598, when the Holy League started the war against the Ottomans, there are some that we present here in brief as they regard the siege against the strong citadel of Timişoara. The narration is a medieval chronicle-like and the related facts should be circumspectly received as overdrawn and the numbers may be reduced with 50% in most of the narrated cases. The German narration supplies a lot of data on the starting moment, the duration and the end of the Banatian campaign. The central character is Sigismund Bathory and to him belong the great decisions and the positive results even if that prince was actually nothing else but a pawn in the hands of the nobles and the army’s commanders. Even if correct the data are less valuable than those ones belonging to other eyewitnesses. This could be the result of the distance between the German editor and Timişoara or of the brief narration that the Transylvanian gentleman offered to him when coming in the middle of Europe. The letter that the prince sent to a Christian State leader in order to explain the military situation and also to ask for some military and financial support is but a sample of his inability to manage a military campaign which began under favourable circumstances. There are also in the German narration some extremely concrete aspects concerning the siege preparation and the battle of the l7th of June. This means that the German paper informer personally took part to the battle, and he told the publisher the details he had directly known.
