Botar Imre şi colecţia sa de antichităţi

  • Subiect: BOTAR IMRE AND HIS COLLECTION OF ANTIQUITIES Botar Imre, schoolmaster and photographer at Twda (ancient Potaissa), made a collection of Roman antiquities, but he didn't study it scientifically. The collection was scattered after the antiquary's death, some of the objects being sold in Austria, Gennany or the U.S.A. We can find' data about that collection from the publications of that time, the photographs made by Botar himself and a recently found autographic manuscript of the antiquary. His collection contains three epigraphic pieces (CIL III 12545, 12645, 1629-8), among which we mention an ex-voto representing Aesculap and Hygia. A bas-relief representing Mithras and Neptun (?), two pineae and the head of a 3rd century statue are noticeable among the sculptural pieces of the collection which also contained earthen vessels, eleven lamps, bricks and a clay toy. A brick could come from a glass workshop. We also mention the ceramics statuettes (two altars, two statuettes representing Venus, one representing Cupidon and one Junona). There was also an iron statuette. The manuscript mentions some gems, glass or bone adornments and a statuette of a mummy. The bronze pieces exceed 260. Mast of them are customary objects or applications for carts or furniture; there were also beautiful ornamental pieces. The mast beautiful are three bronze lamps. A bronze celt and a 4rd century fibula belong to other periods. Many coins from the collection have been studied recently from photographs; the manuscript allows explanations. We learn from the manuscript that the Greek, Hellenistic, Oriental and Barbarian coins were not found at Potaissa.
