Aspecte privind restaurarea unor vase ceramice din cultura Cucuteni

  • Subiect: Aspects regarding the restoration of some pottery vessel from the Cucuteni culture Ceramic objects presented in this paper as case studies are representative items of Cucuteni culture that have been restored by the authors during 1996 – 2012 and were found in the archaeological settlements of Scânteia – “ Dealul Bodeşti”, Iaşi county, in the 1992 – 1999 campaigns, Vorniceni – “Pod Ibăneasa”, Botosani county, the 2000 – 2008 campaigns and Ruginoasa – ”Dealul Drăghici”, Iaşi county, since 2001. The material resulted from the excavations reached the restoration laboratory in a fragmentary state, with massive deposits of earth and carbonates, the first phase of restoration being therefore the washing in running water. Limestone deposits were removed by placing fragments in 20% citric acid bath, which does not affect the polychrome picture based on natural mineral oxides. Acid neutralization was carried out in a continuous stream of running water and then finally with distilled water until the pH became neutral. The next phase was the sorting and pairing fragments for the virtual reconstruction of each vessel, followed by photo documentation. The fragments’ assembling was performed with polyvinyl acetate without plasticizer and the missing parts were filled with gypsum mixed with metal oxides in a color close to vessel clay. In the case of the fruit vessel found at Scânteia we mounted a metal loop in the major missing portion of the leg to prop the addition of gypsum. The chromatic integration and, where necessary, the remaking of the ornamentation, was done with tempera pigments, so that the filling can be legible, following the logical symmetry of the original design. Finally, the objects were preserved with nitrocellulose lacquer diluted in acetone. The aesthetic sensitivity of the creators of the Cucuteni culture vessels, the uniqueness of each item and the special feeling they inspire to the nowadays viewers, determine us, as followers of these perfect artists, to attempt to recover and proudly promote this wonderful legacy, both in Romania and especially abroad, as a duty to the ancestors.
