The 10th of May national holiday in Romanian public schools (1897-1910). A case study of patriotic education in the time of Spiru Haret

  • Subiect: This article deals with the ways of celebrating the Romanian national holiday on May 10th in the system of public schools during the time when Spiru Haret had been the Minister of Public Education. Shortly afier his appointment in 1897, the liberal politician enacted a set of ceremonial events in which students- in both primary and secondary schools- took part and which aimed to strengthen the traditional celebrations of the Coronation and the patriotic sentiments of the pupils. Not only artistic ways of communication (poetry, music, theatre), but also militaristic and masculine experiences, such as the procession of troops and the oina game, made up an event that was meant to bring the symbol ofthe ruler of the nation embodied by King Charles I closer to future citizens. Students were expected to express the Iove for their country and the loyalty to their ruler following a schedule and a given repertoire, as the ceremony kept going in an organized selling. A more detailed description of the events that were happening in Bucharest on the 10th of May helps us beller understand how the pedagogical mechanism of patriotism worked at the dawn of the twentieth century in Romania.
