Evolution of Romanian Studies of Astronomy and Geodesy in laşi and Bucharest in the 19th Century

  • Subiect: During the 19th century the Romanian astronomical studies were gradually integrated in the Romanian society. The defining moments in the evolution of the Romanian society, such as the end of the Phanariote era, the adoption of the Organic Regulations, the Union of 1859, and the founding of the Universities of laşi (1860) and Bucharest ( 1864) all have had a profound impact on the development and integration ofscience in the Romanian society during the 18th and 19th centuries. The aim of this article is to provide an image of the development of the modern astronomical science in Romania, to show the important role of the Universities of laşi and Bucharest in the transition between premodern and modern astronomy, to expiare the biographies, the acadt!mic careers, and the scientific interests of the Romanian Professors of Astronomy and Geodesy from the Universities of Universities of laşi and Bucharest, underlining their role in the evolution of Astronomy and Geodesy as academic disciplines, as well as their contribution to the modernisation of the Romanian society, by training new generations of scientists and developing the Romanian scientific infrastructure.
