  • Subiect: Considering with good reason, that control over the entire Carpathian arch presented a continental importance, and taking into account, that the Romanian insurrection had forced the Wehrmacht into losing the Soutihern Carpathians and most of the Western ones, the German high commands tried to make up for that critical situation by mounting a strategic offensive which would have pushed forward their troops along the entire mountain range, the passes that open into the wide plain of Central Europe included. It was predsely that offensive that was to be checked by what has been called the Romanian cover operation of September 1944, the success of which provided the forces opposing the Whermacht particularly the Soviet armies, with a wide bridgehead in the plain lying in the west of Romania, where from their advance towards the south-east of the Nazi Reich could proceed srnoothly and across an open, even area, which meant considerable advantages. given their superiority in terms of effectives and armour.
