Etnografie europeană: proiectul unei discipline

  • Subiect: EUROPEAN ETHNOLOGY: THE PROJECT OF A DISCIPLINE "European Ethnology'', also known as "Ethnology of Europe", is the name for the project of institutionalizing a discipline specialized with the study of the European continent as a cultural aria. The efforts of creating a coherent epistemology, in order to insure the legitimacy of the field, began in the early '70s. From the very beginning, European Ethnology, based on a French-oriented tradition, evolved independently from another discipline focused on the European territory, the Anthropology of Europe, defined by its anglo-american perspective. At the same time, the sources of its identity lied, for the European Ethnology, with both the national traditions Folklore and the classical, colonial Anthropology. All this network of influencing or ignoring one another represents the very modalities of constituting the discipline as an independent entity. But the final outcomes of the process of building a specific anthropological field under the name "European Ethnology" can be inferred from the existence of a specific object, a coherent program and the legitimacy of its field of investigation. The intended purpose of this article is to analyze the extent to which European Ethnology succeeded or failed in creating itself as a legitimate, distinct discipline in the field of Anthropology.
