Investigaţii osteologice preliminare asupra paleofaunei descoperite în clădirea vămii din oraşul Porosissum

  • Subiect: Preliminary Osteological Investigations on the Paleo fauna discovered in the custom building of the roman City of Porolissum The authors analyzed 1518 bone pieces which were discovered in the two barracks of the custom building, and at the gate (entrance). The custom building was situated at the entrance in the roman city Porolissum. The analyzed bones constitute only a part of the material discovered in the custom building. The bone pieces that was found in the other part of the building such as gate towers, offices. corners have not been made. The Roman custom house from Porolissum started its activity at the beginning of the second century A. D. Later, towards the middle of the same century it was built in stone. It functioned till the end of the Roman rule in Dacia (275 A.D.). The barracks from the interior of the custom house were inhabited by a small military unit, probably o part of the cohorts I Augusta Ituraeorum or an independent unit of Ituraei (a numerus) (fig. 1) The bone pieces belong to the following species (fig. 2-3): sheep - goats (584), cattle (423), swine (248), horses (48), fowl (31), carnivorous (18), rabbits (3). The identified paleo fauna is diverse, the best represented being the sheep. The numerically dominant species are sheep, cattle and swine. The others species have an ·insignificant percentage. Domestic animals are in far greater number than wild animals, which could lead to the conclusion that animal breading was practiced on an economical scale. It could also be ascertained that technics for improvement of races were applied in case of the cattle. The presence of wild animals confirms the existence of a rich cinegenic fond.
