Despre relaţiile comerciale dintre romani şi "barbari" cu privire specială la spaţiul dintre Carpaţi şi Prut

  • Subiect: The modern historiography has analysed in various ways the commercial relations between the Roman Empire and different “barbarian” areas, closer or remoter to its borders. Besides the ancient written sources, mapping the constantly dynamic archaeological finds is extremely efficient when attempting to approach this issue. The East Carpathian area enjoys an extremely complex situation relative to the discoveries of products with a Roman character, mainly due to the uneven volume of archaeological researches, the publication stage and, not least of all, the inconsistent approach of various categories of products that may be subscribed to the notion of Roman “imports”. The dynamics of the finds of Roman products is variable, and for our reference area several phases, with defining features, influenced it. Roman products reach out far beyond Orbis Romanus as a result of indirect connections, such as distribution or circulation of goods and of direct contacts, such as the movement of people, in both cases as a result of exchange or political events. It is stated that Roman civilization influenced the barbarians through people and through objects. These are the main ideas that we discuss in the present paper. We take into considerations the opinions which the research of other areas form Barbaricum conducted to, but witch, some time are applicable in our case. Moreover, we tried to distinguish between the paradoxes of applying modern bias to ancient relations witch seems to be more often exposed to the barbarian’s mentality. In this opinion the modern exchanges are to be seen as ancient rituals of reciprocal barter of gifts.
