O mască din judeţul Sălaj - sfanşagoşul

  • Subiect: „The Sfansagos” – a Traditional mask from Sălaj Based on ethnographical researches, the paper gives the description of a folk custom in the villages on the upper valley of the Crasna and Barcău rivers. The custom is a variant of disguise (called sfansagos, sfarsang, sfarsan, mascati or moime) practiced by the youth attending the evening sittings of the village women (haba) during the Advent. For their enjoyment the boys dressed in girl's clothes and vice versa, they put on odd (not paired), shoes, wore ragged clothes, or clothes with inside out in very lively colors. Elaborate properties were lacking, beside this improvised clothing they only resorted to the soiling of their faces either with pitch or with dust (more recently lipstick for makeup) and to the making of pumpkin masks potato teeth and nose. Beyond the intrinsic value of the disguise it's hard-owing to lack of information- to establish the deep significance of the game. A primary association could be made with the vigil games, the mixing of the repertoire between the two manifestations being already known. Another parallel could be drawn. with the masked games occasioned by the winter celebrations, owing to the proximity in time when these two customs are performed. Another possibility would be considered those manifestations which aim the revealing the ethnic through the esthetic: mocking at the gypsies, spinsters, ugly people; or apotrophaical effects through ostentatious displaying of part or noise. But overall the tendency amusement is evident, especially after the tiring summer and autumn works. The whole process of contamination and dissolution of forms demonstrates. the wide circulation of the asked games and the existence in ancient times of some convincing and deep significance.
