Un cuptor de ars ceramică descoperit în aşezarea dacilor liberi de la Zalău - Valea Miţei

  • Subiect: In the spring of 1983, a pottery kiln was discovered in the site of free Dacians of the Valea Mâţii (the new sector of the town of Zalău). The site is situated some 11,5 km West from the north-western limes - Meseşhill sector - and some 13 km West of the defense line of Porolissum. The size of kiln is 1 X 0,98 X0,96 m; its upper part and its upper bottom (that separated the oven where the clay vessels were backed from the furnace proper), were destroyed by the digging work for a plant; the furnace itself and the central pillar that supported the upper bottom remained undamaged. A large amount of ceramic fragments were discovered in the kiln; some of them made of fine gray clay with impressed ornaments, imitating the provincial terra sigillata of Porolissum (Plates VIII-X) some of them of rougher clay. The last one represent fragments of bigger vessels (like pots and jars). The shape of these vessels was influenced by the roman provincial earthen ware of Dacia. The pottery kiln is dated in the 3rd century A.D. and is the first circular kiln, with central pillar, discovered in a free Dacian settlement in the northwestern Romania.
