Recipiente de sticlă. Necropola birituală de la Barcea (secolul IV d. Hr.)(jud. Galaţi)

  • Subiect: Glass containers are included in the category of valuable offerings (goods) for the departed. A number of 17 glass containers were found in 15 tombs, out of which 16 were found in 14 inhumation tombs and another fragment in an incineration tomb. Among these, only six glasses are intact and were found in inhumation tombs 23, 50, 114, 123, 136 and 137; three of them are restorable (from tombs 137, 154 and 165) and one can be rebuilt (from tomb 134). In order to establish the typology of the glass recipients, 10 containers were used that came from tombs 23, 50, 114, 123, 134, 136, 137, 157, 165 and 167, taking into account their shape, thickness and decoration. They were divided into four main types, with variants and sub-variants. Type 1- Glasses with polished facets – with two variants, 1a and 1b; variant 1b has two sub-variants, 1b1 and 1b2. Type 2 – Thick glasses with medallions and inscriptions Type 3 - Thin cone-shaped glasses – with three variants: 3a, 3b and 3c; variant 3c has two sub-variants, 3c1 and 3c2. Type 4 – Glass recipient During a period of peace in Barbaricum, glass workshops were established and the trade with the Roman provinces from the south of Danube flourished. This explains the variety of the glass containers found in the area of the Sântana de Mureş- Chernyakhov culture. The glass containers found in the bi-ritual necropolis in Barcea, along with other burial objects, illustrate the development stages of this cemetery
