Monedele descoperite în complexul arheologic roman din secolele II-III, de la Gârla Mare (com. Gârla Mare, jud. Mehedinţi) - Un studiu de caz asupra economiei monetare în spaţiul rural al provinciei Dacia / Coins Found In the 2nd-3rd Centuries Roman Settlement From Gârla Mare (comm. of Gârla Mare, Mehedinţi County) - A Case Study on the Monetary Economy in a Rural Settlement in Dacia

  • Subiect: The author presents a sample of 110 Roman coins found in a Roman settlement at Gârla Mare (comm. of Gârla Mare, Mehedinţi County), during the archaeological researches undertaken since 1992 until 2003. Most of these coins were already briefly published by Stîngă 2005. The real function of the settlement of Gârla Mare was debated by the archaeologists. Stîngă had asserted that it was a villa rustica, meanwhile Benea 2006b assumed that it was a mansio. Based on the numismatic evidence, the author of these lines supposes that it was a villa rustica indeed. The coin sample found at Gârla Mare during the excavations since 1992-2003, consists of: 1. Marcus Antonius (no. 1) - 1 (AR); 2. Tiberius I (no 2) - 1 (AE); 3. Claudius I (no. 3) - 1 (AE); 4. Vespasianus (no. 4) - 1 (AE); 5. Domitianus (nos 5-8) - 4 (AE); 6. Traianus (no. 9-17) - 9 (2 AR+7 AE); 7. Hadrianus (no. 18-28) - 11 (3 AR+8 AE); 8. Antonius Pius (no. 29-40) - 11 (3 AR+8 AE); 9. Marcus Aurelius (no. 41-44) - 4 (4 AE); 10. Commodus (no. 45) - 1 (AE); 11. Septimius Severus (no. 46-52) - 7 (7 AR); 12. Caracalla (no. 53-55) - 3 (1 AR+2 AE); 13. Severus Alexander (no. 56-88) - 33 (5 AR+28 AE); 14. Maximinus Thrax (no 89) - 1 (1 AR); 15. Gordianus III (no 90-93) - 4 (4 AE); 16. Unprecise (no. 94-110) - 17 (4 AR+13 AE). The author proposed to measure the main trends of the monetary influxes in the area of the Roman settlement of Gârla Mare not, with the traditional coefficient coin/regnal year (c/ry), but sesterces/regnal year or ases/regnal, using the current account-money of the Roman society during the 2n
