Femei în familie: relaţii familiale şi roluri în societatea transilvăneană în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIX-lea

  • Subiect: In the nineteenth century Transylvania was a traditional society, in order that the man had the main role while the woman remained in a deep social and economic dependency. So, the aim of this research was to determine the general guidelines in the Transylvanian women's behaviour, taking into account the structure of Romanian society. To reach the core of this problem we took into consideration some general indicators like: the matrimonial behaviour, the roles and functions into the couple, the attitude towards children and other relatives, and women's tasks in family and in household. Watching all those parameters, we have identified the behaviours defining women's everyday existence in Transylvania. In this regard we noticed that all data related to matrimonial behaviour and to the roles of the two sexes in family are influenced by moral norms and constraints that society has developed. From the marriage motivations to the relationships which were established within the family, the whole existence was governed by the need for social acceptance. Those who did not respect the rules were all exposed to critics coming from the social group in which they lived. Therefore, the family was the only possible means for a woman's fulfilment, family isolation leading inevitably to her marginalization in society.
