Vila Ştefănescu şi cinematograful din Băile Govora, judeţul Vâlcea (Scurt istoric)

  • Subiect: In "The Encyclopedia of Romania”, it is mentioned the existence of some luxury hotels and cozy villas in Govora, located in an exceptional natural environment. At the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century the majority of the private villas are built: "Ştefanescu" Hotel, "Dr. Iliescu" Villa (the present headquarters of the city library), Villas "Dr. Ţăranu", "Esmeralda", "Colonel Ivanovich", "Constanţa-Marietta", "Eftimiu", "engineer Popovici". Today many of these villas like "Cecille", "Bereşteanu", "Hortensia", "Aslan", Dr. Zorileanu do not exist anymore. By their demolition, a large part of the charm of yesteryear from Govora has disappeared for good. ,,Ştefănescu” villa, was built in 1892 by the brothers Ştefănescu, who were born in Galaţi. Between 1938 and 1952, the Mint National Printing functioned in this building. In October 1939, this hotel has been host for over 120 Polish refugees, most of them being senior government officials. It seems that they would be housed a part of the Poland's treasury, too. The cinema was built between 1928 and 1929. The architect of the building was Virginia Maria Andreescu Haret, the granddaughter of the painter from Barbizon, Ion Andreescu, the daughter-in-law of the former minister Spiru Haret, the first Romanian architect woman who at the time held the position of chief architect inspector in the Ministry of Public Instruction.
