O ceaşcă dacică timpurie descoperită la Ciurea (judeţul Iaşi)

  • Subiect: „This study is based on a fortuitous discovery made in the village of Ciurea (commune of Ciurea, Iaşi County). In a 2m-deep cesspool, alongside numerous fragments of clay bricks, several pottery shards were found. After reconstitution, they were proven to belong to a Dacian cup. This item suggests the existence of a new archaeological point near a large Geto- Dacian settlement – rich in Greek, Bastarnic and Celtic imports – pinpointed at “Botu Cihanului”. After reconstitution, its dimensions are as follows: height – 8 cm; diameter of the upper side – 9 cm; diameter of the base – 5.8 cm. The thickness of lateral walls ranges between 0.6-0.8 cm, while that of the bottom measures 1.4 cm. The handle – featuring an approximately polygonal section and a thickness of around 1.8 cm – is broken for the most part; only the ends that used to be attached to the body are preserved. It begins organically from the slightly rounded rim of the cup and it connects to the wall in the lower third. The cup corresponds to Variant 1, Type I of the cup with over-raised handle within the typology proposed by I. C. Crişan. This type of vessel could still be encountered in the 6th-5th centuries BC, in Geto-Dacian necropolises and settlements and in the Scythian graves of Transylvania. Such cups were also discovered at Stânceşti-City I (Botoşani), Poiana (Galaţi), Holboca (Iaşi), etc. Because it belongs to the category of handmade porous pottery, the type of cup found at Ciurea could be encountered in the 6th-5th centuries BC (Late Hallstatt), as well as in the 3rd- 2nd centuries BC (La Tène II). Therefore, all the technical elements corroborated with the context of the find suggest that the cup belongs to the La Tène II cultural setting.”
