Obiecte legate de activitatea metalurgică din aşezarea specifică bronzului târziu de la Gârbovăţ (jud. Galaţi)

  • Subiect: „The question of metallurgy in the Late Bronze Age in the eastern area beyond the Carpathians has not been studied in depth in regards to metal objects. Little is known about the artifacts used in the metallurgical process and for this reason the authors of this article have republished information about some of these objects. Many of the categories of objects of the Noua culture in Gârbovăţ (Galaţi county) have been analysed yet some of them have only recently been found. These include a clay nozzle from a bellows (tuyere), spoons which were probably used in the moulding process, a crucible, several moulds made of stone and clay, along with several stone grinders. The fact that these objects were recovered during older fieldwork and that the archaeological context in which they were found is not known limit the conclusions which can be drawn concerning specialized workshops for producing bronze items. The objects presented in the article are related to the main technological stages in the process of obtaining bronze items: smelting, casting and finishing. The clay nozzle is the only example known in the region of the Noua culture. Still, the clay nozzle and stone moulds have many similar analogies in both for the area within the Carpathians and the north-west Pontic area. Unfortunately, the fragmented state of these items does not allow for the determination of all the tool types that could have been obtained from this method of casting. In some cases, the details of the moulds indicated that there used to be cast spearheads, semicircular bars and probably socketed axes. Taking into account the dimensions of the tools used in the metallurgical activity of the Gârbovăţ settlement, one can observe that large amounts of metal were not being processed. Of course, the great distance from the copper resources may explain this situation, and some bronze objects could also have been obtained from the melting of previous items.”
