Fragmente de meteorit în colecţia Muzeului Vrancei

  • Subiect: At around 10:30 on 12 February 1947, eyewitnesses in the Sikhote Alin Mountains, Soviet Union, observed a large bolide brighter than the Sun that came out of the north and descended at an angle of about 41 degrees. An estimated 70 tonnes of material survived the fiery passage through the atmosphere and reached the Earth. Krinov had estimated the post-atmospheric mass of the meteoroid at some 23,000 kg . The strewn field for this meteorite covered an elliptical area of about 1.3 km2. Some of the fragments made impact craters, the largest of which was about 26 m across and 6 m deep. Fragments of the meteorite were also driven into the surrounding trees. The Sikhote-Alin meteorite is classified as an iron meteorite belonging to the chemical group IIAB and with a coarse octahedrite structure. The two fragments were donated to Vrancea Museum by U.R.S.S Academy of Science , and analyzed at University “Al.I.Cuza” Iaşi, Faculty of Geology, in 1993 by mr. Gabriel Ovidiu Iancu . The fragments have both a scientific and didactic importance. Scientific importance is derived from the chemical group to wich it belongs. Is the only meteorite Group AB II of Romania. The chemical composition of the meteorite allows us to compare with Earth's core. Such comparisons help us in explaining the meteorite origin, or the disintegration of astral bodies, similar in structure to the Earth.
