  • Subiect: The airns of the present paper are identifying and pointing out some of the beliefs that are to be found within the specific ceremony of the family custorns, based on tying and untying knots. On the one hand, at birth, untying the knots represent the condition of a successful coming into being. On the other hand, when two persons are getting married, it is thought that their family life would be positively influenced if a towel was tied around their necks when stepping into their new home. As regards the burial customs, the untied knots on the cloths of the dead, sewing the clothes of the dead with untied threads ensure both the separation from the world of the living ones and the irreversibility of the road to the other world. We want to point out that the knots acquire magic and apotropaic powers within the family customs and this thing is explained by the conception that the knot represents the interruptions that man is supposed to overcome during his earthly lifetime.
