Manolache Costache Epureanu - omul epocii sale

  • Subiect: Manolache Costache Epureanu-A Man of His Age Manolache Costache Epureanu- lawyer and politician, founding member of the National Liberal Party (1875), Chairman of the Conservative Party (3 February to 7 September 1880), Chairman of the Council of Ministers from Iassy (27 April 1859-30 April 1860), Chairman of the Council of Ministers from Bucharest (13 July 1859-30 April 1860), Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Romania (20 April to 14 December 1870, 27 April to 23 July 1876). Descendant of a boyar family with ancestors from the time of Stephen the Great, son of Governor Ioan Epureanu, he followed primary and secondary education in Haidelberg, university studies in Berlin and Jena, where he obtained his doctorate in law, 1839. Back at home, he is chairman of the Tutova Courthouse (1844-1846). Involved in the revolutionary attempt of 1848 in Moldova, he is arrested, escapes, takes part in the Great Assembly from Blaj (3-5 May 1848) and revolutionary meeting in Braşov and Cernăuţi. After the withdrawal of the occupying Russian troops, prince Alexandru Ghica appoints him president of the Divan. Proponent of the idea of union, he conducted an intense activity in support of the Central Committee of Union, a deputy in the ad hoc and Elective Assembly which elected Cuza prince of Moldavia on 5 January 1859. He was also the Chairman of the Elective Assembly (17 December 1865-3 January 1866) and of the Constituent Assembly (9 May to 6 July 1866) which proclaimed Charles of Hohenzollern prince of Romania. Minister of Justice in Lascar Catargiu's government, he resigned disagreeing with the establishment of Credit Land without participation of foreign capital. For the same reason he leaves the conservatives, then takes part in the founding of the National Liberal Party. Manolache Costache Epureanu took its first steps towards removing the tax privileges, opting for a uniform tax on the inhabitants of the country. He also coordinated the action of secularization of autonomous monastery estates (chinovii), encouraged the creation of a university in Iassy, took steps to modernize the army (the establishment of an engineering battalion) and tried to set up credit institutions (National Bank and Loan land). Deputy and Senator for all of the legislatures between 1859 and 1880, he oscillated between moderate liberalism and moderate conservatism.
