Iuliu Maniu, orator al Marii Adunări Naţionale de la Alba Iulia din 1 Decembrie 1918

  • Subiect: Iuliu Maniu orator of the Great National Assembly from Alba Iulia – December 1st 1918 There have been a lot of publications, especially in the last quarter of century. about the Great National Assembly from Alba Iulia which decided by plebiscite the union of the Transylvania, Banat and Crişana and Maramureş with Romania (the fatherland). A shortcoming of Marxist historiography could be considered the exaggeration of the role that the left wing, the social democratic party had in the preparation and development of this assembly. Even Vasile Goldiş, the author of the resolution project and the main speaker of the assembly was the beneficiary of a preferential treatment owing to his left views. Having no intention to contest the merits of the social-democrats and especially those of the valuable politician and scholar Vasile Goldis, the present paper tries to rehabilitate Iuliu Manius' contribution to this assembly, as the above mentioned Marxist historiography tried to manifestly wrong this remarkable leader of the Romanian National Party. After mentioning Maniu's contribution to the finishing of the resolution project, the author analyses minutely the great speech uttered by Iuliu Maniu in front of 1228 official delegates and its political significance. The natural conclusion is that the convincing pleading in favor of the project constitutes an important oratory document and it equals the speech uttered by Vasile Goldiş. As a matter of fact, the two speeches complete each other being a brilliant synthesizing and an expression of the Romanian national ideal in the moment of its triumph.
