Undergoing nowadays a necessary process of re-evaluation, luliu Maniu entered the history as one of the creators of Greater Romania (in whose defence he fought a lifetime afterwards). Yet, his Vision was not limited only to the ideal o f național unification as, after the creation of the național unitary state, Maniu desired to cover the road towards the creation o f United Europe. This is an extremely important side o f his political doctrine and action, which is far too little known and de- scribes him in a complementary hypostasis, that o f a great European.
Sketching such an image is the purpose o f the present approach which, however, does not intend to be exhaustive. W ithout resorting to the argument o f authority, we must mention that this issue has been pointed out by George Ciorănescu (The Romanians and the Federalist Idea, Bucharest, 1996) and also by Apostol Stan (luliu Maniu, Bucharest, 1996) who, in their outstanding works, although tersely approaching this subject, offer new openings and valorous suggestions as they insert Maniu in the federalist trend before the Second World War.
