Un vechi ansamblu rezidenţial cu picturi murale: stăreţia Mănăstirii Dintr-un Lemn

  • Subiect: „Residential houses built inside monasteries represent one of the few categories of Romanian medieval civil buildings which were preserved over time in a relatively large extent. The abbey’s house of „Dintr-un Lemn” monastery (Vâlcea district) was built by boyar Preda Brâncoveanu during the second quarter of the 17th Century. Prince Ştefan Cantacuzino added a loggia to the house and decorated its easterly wall with mural paintings in 1715, representing four saints in full length portraits and the Nativity of Virgin Mary. At the entrance of the house, Ştefan Cantacuzino built a pavilion which was decorated with mural paintings later, during 1760- 1782, glorifying Virgin Mary, the patroness of the monastery. The mural paintings of the abbey’s house of „Dintr-un Lemn” monastery are probably the largest preserved today in an old Romanian residence.”
