  • Subiect: The Romanian-Soviet relations were strained during the interwar age, due to the fact Soviet Russia hadn’t recognized the union of Bessarabia with Romania (27th of March 1918). The attempt to renew the political relations through a series of meetings and bilateral conferences failed until 1934. The talks between Nicolae Titulescu and Maxim Litvinov, the ministers of foreign affairs of the two states, ended with the signing of a protocol at the Conference of Montreux (July 1936), which is at the basis of the Romanian-Soviet non-aggression pact. The postponing of the signing of this pact for the 1936 fall, the removal of Nicolae Titulescu from his position as the minister of foreign affairs, as a result of the pressures done by some right oriented circles in the country and abroad (29th of August 1936), made its accomplishment impossible. Romania condemned all the aggression acts of the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan), that culminated in the Münich compromise (29th-30th of September 1938), and the annexation of the entire Czechoslovakia (March 1939). The tripartite negotiations between the Soviets, the English and the French in the summer of 1939 failed. The Soviet Union signed a nonaggression pact with Germany (23rd of August 1939), known as the Ribbentrop – Molotov Pact of partition of the dominance circles in Eastern Europe. The fate of Bessarabia was already sealed. As the Second World War broke with the German aggression over Poland (September 1939) and several western states (April-June 1940), the USSR would directly show its intention to annex Bessarabia. Following the two ultimates from 27th of June 1940 and the forced agreement of the Royal Council of king Carol the IInd, Bessarabia joined Bucovina and the Herţa county in being annexed by the USSR. The drama of Bessarabia led the way to new territorial losses demanded by Hungary and Bulgaria, which marked the decay of Greater Romania.
