Aplica ornamentală a unei căşti de gladiator de la Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa

  • Subiect: The ornamental fitting of a gladiator helmet from Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa I am debating in this brief note the functional aspect of a bronze fitting discovered in the last century at Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the main Roman town of Dacia. It is a cast bronze image of a gryphon in a prone position, (fig. 1). With the following dimensions: length from the beak to the tail = 15,1 cm; length from the forepads to the tail = 12,4 cm; width = 5 cm; maximum height =9,8 cm. The item was, probably, discovered in the amphitheatre area where the 19th century excavations were unfolded. The object was several times published and considered as a furniture fitting. I have taken into consideration some details, as the system of fastening. Under the belly of the animal there is a little rectangular rod, having a section of 1,8 X 1,4 cm, which is broken today. The lower part of the fitting is not at all finished and its shape suggests the fitting was placed on a curved surface.
