Percepţii româneşti asupra evenimentelor petrecute în Bulgaria în zilele de 23 septembrie - 4 octombrie 1918

  • Subiect: Romanian perceptions on the events occurring in Bulgaria during 23 September-4 October 1918 The twelve days span between the collapse of the Macedonian front and the coronation of king Boris III represented a very dramatic and eventful period for Bulgaria, the smallest state from the defeated coalition during World War I. Because of the proximity, the wartime adversity, starting from August 1916, and the territorial dispute regarding Dobrudja, the events and evolutions from Bulgaria were particularly important for Romania. The hereby article, focusing on the Romanian perceptions on these changes and turmoil from Bulgaria, uses, as main sources, on one hand, the memoirs of pro-Entente personalities (I.Gh. Duca, Queen Mary, Charles J. Vopicka), and, on the other hand, the notes of the Germanophile politician Alexandru Marghiloman, who was the head of the government at the start of 1918. Some unpublished sources were also used, such as military archive documents that included the contents of radio telegrams and articles from the press of the time. Both the Ententophiles and the Germanophiles had made very optimistic calculations concerning the events in Bulgaria, the former rightfully considering these an indicator of the iminent total victory for the Entente and the latter seeing a good opportunity to get some concessions from Germany and Austro-Hungary, which were erroneously considered to be notable Powers.
