July 1914. The Jssue of Responsibility in Historiography

  • Subiect: This paper focuses on the historical view over the responsibilities for the outbreak of World War I. Despite its enormous documentation basis, from edited documents, memoirs to dedicated literature, the quest to find the cause(s) for sending millions of soldiers to war is still present in historiography. Various interpretations of the July crisis have been evolving in a truly multinational literature, out of the crisis triggered by the murder in Saravejo. From Bethmann Hollweg to Luigi Albertini and .from Fritz Fischer to Joachim Remak, the enigma remains. How was the responsibility attributed? Was it a path beyond leaders' control, a grab for the world power or a shared guilt? Responsible for the existence of their countries, the decis ion making units of the states involved in the July crisis 1914 were under the threat of the European War. With a strong military injluence that favored the conflict against the balance of power in Europe, our paper will bring into light three arguments that historical debate did noi present in an exhaustive way. Furthermore, a question that needs further analysis emerged on the basis of this research. How did fear shape the decisions of the crises? The global conflict that started in 1914, transformed the world in an unprecedented manner. The fighting that started in Europe spread shortly to different areas of the world Humanity stood on the brink.
