Arta orientală în România

  • Subiect: The article presents a concise history of Oriental art focusing on China, Japan, but also on the Ottoman Turkish environment, as an introduction to essential aspects in Oriental-influenced realities in Romanian arts – architecture, sculpture, painting, decorative arts. The article starts from Edward W. Said’s definition of the term „Orientalism” as the totality of real or imaginary knowledge the Western-European society has had over the so-called Oriental countries – those of North Africa, Moorish Spain, countries in the Near East or the Extreme Orient. Oriental influences have been present, in time, leaving their mark upon various fields of activity, among which – culture. Romanian painting has been subjected to Oriental influences mostly during the 19th century, due to its geographical position, but also to the fact that most Romanian artists were trained in Western Europe, moulded by Orientalist fashions in Paris, for instance, then returning home and valuing the Oriental aspects in the Romanian lands.
