Orientalismul în colecţionism: rolul culorii în profilul de colecţionar al lui Krikor Zambaccian

  • Subiect: At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Romanian collectors wanted their collection to be seen as a panorama of the Romanian artistic movement, contributing in educating the public. Collectors who promoted such collections were Anastase Simu, Iancu Kalinderu or Vasile Morţun, the collections of the first two becoming public during their lifetime. They wanted to impose their collections as collections of European art and were not very concerned with modern Romanian art, although they supported it financially. In addition to the collection seen as a panorama of art, another type of collection was now born in Romania, one in which the works of art were purchased only for the collector’s pleasure, without the desire to create an educational space for the public. If the first type of collector was not so close to the artists, the second type tried to be a friend of the artists, whom he materially supported and tried to understand their art. Such collections in this period grew with Lazăr Munteanu, Leon Laserson, Iosif N. Dona, Krikor Zambaccian or Emil Ottulescu. An accomplished type of collector, who sought to enter the art world more than through acquisitions but also with ideas, was Krikor Zambaccian. From visiting museums, or creating a specialized library in the field of art, he amed to get closer and closer to the artists and even to write studies and monographs on art and artists, thus becoming an enthusiastic expert, according to George Călinescu. Given his Oriental origins, Zambaccian’s writings and collection will show a strong predilection for color, which I will seek to outline in this study, to see what was its role in his art collector profile.
