Dumitru I. Mihalache

  • Subiect: Dumitru I. Mihalache The paper presents the activity of Dumitru Mihalache (1885-1916) in several domains such as education, ethnography, folklore, publishing, and literature. Because he wanted to improve the educational system he significantly modified the teaching method. He was a passionate observer of the folk culture, which was slightly in decline in his times; he understood the importance of preserving and capitalizing it. Thus, on his own or together with C. Rădulescu-Codin, gathered ethnographic information especially about the annual events, about customs and beliefs, about the “folk medicine”. He wrote together with C. Rădulescu-Codin a book called The Folk Holidays (1909). He also gathered fairy-tales, legends, children songs, anecdotes, riddles and then he published them. A part of his folk prose was published posthumously: Romanian Fairy Tales. Stories. He was also a writer and a publisher. As a writer he evoked the poverty of the peasants, while as a publisher he wrote a few articles about the social and professional and ethnographic issues.
