Din activitatea social-culturală a Marelui Ban Mihalache Ghica

  • Subiect: The Social and Cultural Activity of the Great Ban Mihalache Ghica Mihalache Ghica, a controversial political personality from the first half of the 19th century, brother of two of the principles from Valachia - Grigore Ghica the Second and Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica, was a passionate antiquary and one of the pioneer archaeologists. Because of his less scientific method of leading archaeological diggings, historians from the upcoming generations of archaeologists have criticized and doubted the good intentions beneath the Mihalache Ghica’s interventions in the field. As an initiator of the first museum of Wallachia – a basis for the future National Museum of Antiquities –, as a founder of an agriculture school and as an editor of reviews that had the purpose of revealing the results of his archaeological excavations, Mihalache Ghica showed great interest for cultural activities and it can be assessed that he contributed, even by his incorrect means, to the development of Romanian archaeology.
