Tezaurul de monede medievale descoperit în localitatea Gelu, jud. Timiş (sec. XV-XVI) / The medieval coin hoard found at Gelu, Timiş county (15th-16th c.).

  • Subiect: A hoard of 900 silver coins (groschen, 1 /2 groschen, dinars and hellers) was found at the Gelu village (Timiş County). Now it is in the patrimony at the National History Museum of Romania. The coins were issued in Poland, Danzig, Świdnica, Prussia, Transylvania, Hungary and Bohemia between 1479 - 1492 and 1597. The chronological classification of the coins according to the issuing authorities, mints, mint masters and reference catalogues made it possible for the author to grasp some sorts among the already known monetary types and to identify pieces which have not been published yet. The coins struck in the Transylvanian mints (Sibiu, Baia Mare) are particularly dealt with. The hoard confirms the complex and intense economical life of the 15th – 16th centuries and enables us to establish the role played by the Banat area in the then monetary circulation and its relationships with the countries of the middle and Western Europe. The value of the coins points to an owner who was a representative of the middle class (craftsman, merchant, peasant, townsman or mercenary). The reason for the hoard hiding have to be connected with the social, military and political unrest of the end of the 16th century, when the populace of Banat joined Michael the Brave's struggle for national unification.
